Customized EMR For 8,000 Pharmacies

By on August 28, 2012

Soon Walgreens will be implementing a customized EHR system from Greenway Medical Technologies.  The goals is to roll it out to almost 8,000 pharmacies nation wide in order to improve  health services tracking.

The customized EHR solution Walgreens will be using is called WellHealth and it will coordinate other care in the pharmacies.  This includes medication records, immunizations and health test regardless of the Walgreens location.

Although there aren’t any financial incentives for pharmacies to adopt an EHR, the electronic personal health record (ePHR) generated by hospital, pharmacists and other healthcare providers, is an important tool that address concerns about the privacy issues that come with electronic records.

It’s reported that more than half of office-based physicians in the United States use e-prescribing.  The number of pharmacies coming on-line is increasing as well.

Another reason Walgreens i moving to EHRs is due to the reported satisfaction with e-prescribing because of the increased legibility of prescriptions and more efficient processing. It was also found that less staff time was required for routine duties.

Other features of Walgreens customized solution include consumer scheduling of appointments and real-time medical billing.  Currently WellHealth is in 200 stores.
