I’m sure a lot of you will be chomping at the bit to download this viewer as soon as possible.  This free DICOM Hex Viewing software from Sante will allow nerds alike to geek out until their hearts are content.

This software is not for the faint of heart, but if you have some DICOM files laying around and you want to feel like ‘super tech’ and impress your coworkers, give it a shot.  This software is intended for advanced troubleshooting.  I’ve used similar hex tools for troubleshooting HL7 messages, so this DICOM Hex Viewer will be a nice addition to my tool kit.

You might not ever need it, but it may be nice to have.  The software can be used with Windows XP/Vista/7/8 and it’s almost 2MB in size.

Click here to jump over to CNET and grab a copy of the Sante DICOM HexViewer.

Here’s a couple of great resources on DICOM and PACS  that I found on Amazon.com.  Great tools…

FREE PACS Server – Open Source

Palantir aims at providing a simple, yet powerful DICOM standalone server. Palantir can turn any computer running Windows or Linux into a DICOM store (in other words, a mini-PACS system).

Its architecture is lightweight, meaning that no complex database administration is required, nor the installation of third-party dependencies.

Here’s a couple of great resources on DICOM and PACS  that I found on Amazon.com.  Great tools…

What makes Palantir unique is the fact that it provides a RESTful API. Thanks to this major feature, it is possible to drive Palantir from any computer language.

The DICOM tags of the stored medical images can be downloaded in the JSON file format. Furthermore, standard PNG images can be generated on-the-fly from the DICOM instances by Palantir.

Palantir lets its users focus on the content of the DICOM files, hiding the complexity of the DICOM format and of the DICOM protocol.

Here is a quick an easy DICOM viewer from RadiAnt. I’ve taken some information from the web site and removed some of the marketing adjectives.

Their web site mentioned that it has capacity to read large image series and it can load multiple series at once.  It is also compiled in 64-bit mode so can load very large data sets. It’s frequently updated and has a well-executed web site.

The RadiAnt DICOM Viewer CD/DVD autorun package. It runs from CD/DVD media without installation on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 systems and does not have any additional software or programming requirements (e.g. .NET, Java).

Here’s a couple of great resources on DICOM and PACS  that I found on Amazon.com.  Great tools…

If the user’s operating system permits, the 64-bit version is opened for better efficiency. On older machines the 32-bit version is used. Approximately just 6MB of overhead data is added to the media.

The logo image displayed after opening the application is fully customizable and can be used to show your company information to your clients.

Some of the tools is has include:

  • Fluid zooming and panning
  • Brightness and contrast adjustments, negative mode
  • Preset window settings for Computed Tomography (lung, bone, etc.)
  • Ability to rotate (90, 180 degrees) or flip (horizontal and vertical) images
  • Segment length
  • Mean, minimum and maximum parameter values (e.g. density in Hounsfield Units in Computed Tomography) within circle/ellipse and its area
  • Angle value (normal and Cobb angle)
  • Pen tool for freehand drawing

Some of the DICOM file types supported include:

  • Digital Radiography (CR, DX)
  • Mammography (MG)
  • Computed Tomography (CT)
  • Magnetic Resonance (MR)
  • Positron Emission Tomography PET-CT (PT)
  • Ultrasonography (US)
  • Digital Angiography (XA)
  • Gamma Camera, Nuclear Medicine (NM)
  • Secondary Pictures and Scanned Images (SC)

Types of DICOM images are supported:

  • Monochromatic (e.g. CR, CT, MR) and color (e.g. US, 3D reconstructions)
  • Static images (e.g. CR, MG, CT) and dynamic sequences (e.g. XA, US)
  • Uncompressed and compressed (RLE, JPEG Lossy, JPEG Lossless, JPEG 2000)

carestream_logoTwo recent polls from Diagnostic Imaging reinforce a common sight in today’s hospital and practices—the use of tablets is proliferating. 70 percent of Diagnostic Imaging readers use tablets professionally and 47 percent plan to purchase the new iPad to use in their practice.

This tablet usage is being driven by the appeal of no longer being tethered to a workstation—the ability to consult images with patients at the bedside or on the way to the operating room or emergency department, and access to images easily from home or another clinic via a secure Internet connection.

But mobile viewers require a new approach to image access technology—accessibility without additional software, no storage or technology requirements, and an intuitive design to minimize training and speed adoption. The viewer needs to be independent so it can integrate with other vendors’ PACS systems, DICOM archives, or XDS repositories. It should also be embedded in a HIS or EMR portal to allow clinicians and referring physicians to quickly and easily view patient data and radiology images with a single log-in.

To celebrate the FDA clearance for iPad® of our new Vue Motion, we created a replica iPad out of paper and sent it to many U.S. radiology and IT professionals. We invited the audience to view Carestream’s Michael Hornbeck demonstrate the zero-footprint HTML5 viewer or to download a white paper that outlines how to deploy Vue Motion over multiple sites, making images available to referring physicians, radiologists at home or at remote locations.

Key products features:

  • HTML5 viewer means no software download for devices “zero footprint”
  • PACS agnostic – able to use with any platform
  • Integrates with EMRs
  • Works with XDS

View the video or download the paper to learn how you can connect technologies, physicians and patients.
